How to know if you're ready for a dedicated squad
Dedicated squads are the gold standard for scaling software development — but they're not right for every company. Here's how to know if you're ready.
Zelvante Team
Engineering
A dedicated squad — a fully managed team of engineers, designers, and QA aligned to your product vision — is the most powerful engagement model we offer. It's also the most demanding. Here's how to know if your company is ready for it.
You're ready if...
- You have a product roadmap that extends 6+ months into the future
- You have a dedicated product owner (or you are one) who can make daily priority calls
- Your monthly software budget is $15K+ (the minimum viable squad size)
- You have clear success metrics (revenue, users, conversion rate) the squad can optimize for
- You have existing infrastructure (codebase, deployment pipeline, design system) or a clear plan to build it
If you checked 4-5 of these, you're ready. If you checked 2-3, consider staff augmentation first. If you checked 0-1, you probably need product consulting before engineering.
You're NOT ready if...
- You don't know what you want to build (you need product discovery, not engineering)
- Your roadmap changes every 2 weeks (you need staff augmentation, not a dedicated squad)
- You have no product owner (a squad without a product owner is a very expensive way to build the wrong thing)
- Your budget is under $10K/month (staff augmentation is more flexible at this scale)
- You're pre-product-market fit (focus on validation, not scaling)
The alternative: staff augmentation
If you're not ready for a dedicated squad, staff augmentation is the better choice. You add 1-3 senior engineers to your existing team, under your direction, with full flexibility to scale up or down monthly. It's less expensive, more flexible, and doesn't require the product-owner commitment a dedicated squad demands.
“We started with staff augmentation for 3 months, then upgraded to a dedicated squad once our roadmap was clear. Zelvante made the transition seamless — same engineers, same Slack, just more structure.”
Making the transition
Many of our clients start with staff augmentation and graduate to a dedicated squad once they've validated their roadmap. The transition is seamless — the same engineers who were augmenting your team become the core of your dedicated squad. No knowledge transfer, no ramp-up, no lost context.
